Open Enrollment for Healthcare Benefits

Fall is Open Enrollment for many employers. This is when you can make changes and your final decisions about your insurance benefits for the upcoming year. Many patients aren’t aware that they may have a dental insurance plan with a built-in benefit for orthodontic treatment, including braces, Invisalign®, and other services, so now is a great time to check and see if you indeed have these benefits. If you don’t, this is the time to inquire about adding these benefits.

If you’re actively searching for a new dental plan with orthodontic coverage, be sure to look for a policy that specifically outlines one. Most dental policies that include orthodontics will have coverage for dependents and adults. Pay special attention to premiums, deductibles, waiting periods, and pre-existing benefits (if the insurance will cover treatment in progress), when choosing a policy that best fits you and your family’s needs.

When reviewing the policies, keep in mind that most orthodontic benefits are the same whether you choose a provider that is “in” or “out” of network. Orthodontic coverage is typically a lifetime benefit for each dependent under the policy that will be paid regardless of the network.

For example, using a treatment fee of $4000, if the plan pays 50% of the treatment fee, up to a lifetime maximum of $1500 per child, the plan will pay $1500 (the limit on the plan), while the parent/patient will incur $2500 of the treatment cost.
Spillers Orthodontics accepts most dental insurance policies and will work closely with you to ensure you receive the maximum benefit available through your plan. We file claims as a courtesy to our patients. We also have experience working with Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) to make sure you receive your complete benefit.
